How to install Google Web Designer on a Chromebook

In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of installing Google Web Designer on your Chromebook. Google Web Designer is a powerful tool for creating interactive HTML5-based designs and motion graphics that can run on any device. This tutorial is designed to complement our video guide, providing detailed written instructions for each step.

Compatibility Note

Before we begin, it's important to note that this tutorial is specifically for Chromebooks with an Intel or AMD CPU that support Linux Apps. Unfortunately, this method won't work on Chromebooks with an ARM64 architecture CPU. If you're unsure about your Chromebook's specifications, you can check our list of all currently supported Chromebooks with Linux Apps (Crostini) support.

Step 1: Enable Linux Apps

The first step is to enable Linux apps on your Chromebook. Here's how:

  1. Go to your Chromebook's System Settings
  2. Click on the "About Chrome OS" section in the left panel
  3. Under the "Developer" section, choose "Set up Linux"
  4. Follow the prompts to turn on Linux

This process may take a few minutes, but once completed, you'll have access to a Linux environment on your Chromebook.

Step 2: Update Linux Repositories

Before installing any new software, it's always a good practice to update your system's package lists. We'll do this using the following command:

sudo apt update

To use this command:

  1. Open the Terminal from your app menu
  2. Copy and paste the command into the Terminal
  3. Press Enter to execute the command

This command updates the list of available packages and their versions, but it doesn't install or upgrade any packages.

Step 3: Download Google Web Designer

Next, we'll download the Google Web Designer package. You can find the download link here:

Visit this page and download the appropriate version for your Chromebook.

Step 4: Install Google Web Designer

Once the download is complete, follow these steps to install Google Web Designer:

  1. Open the Files app on your Chromebook
  2. Navigate to the Downloads folder (or wherever you saved the downloaded file)
  3. Right-click on the downloaded .deb file
  4. Select "Install with Linux" from the context menu

The installation process will begin automatically. Once it's complete, Google Web Designer will be available in your app menu.
